Thursday evening August 10, 2006 a group of HAC members and board members attended the Town Hall Meeting to meet candidate for governor,
Jim Davis.

Congressman Davis started his speech with the fact that Florida’s greatest wealth is its people and that we have a state government that has let us down and it is time for a change. He acknowledged HAC members and let us know that he understood why we were there and he expected to learn a lot more about sinkholes! He spoke of the class size that he wants to see it reduced as it was changed with this administration. He outlined a plan he has to increase teacher salaries. He then spoke of the FCAT tests and said it needs to be used as a diagnostic tool not as a political weapon! He let us know that these test are being outsourced to various countries to be graded and that in some cases grading is not being done by someone qualified to grade exams. I believe he used for example a janitor grading OUR children’s FCAT exams.

He is aware of the Insurance Crisis but I believe he was enlightened about how bad it has become and how hard hit Pasco County is. His visions for the future of Citizens Insurance was to have an internal and an external investigation. He also felt it was a good idea to offer discounts for those who did hurricane updates to their homes (I don’t think he realizes that if people can’t afford to pay for their insurance how can they afford to pay for updates to their homes) When asked if he has taken campaign donations from the Insurance Industry he stated he had although he though it was only one donation and offered for anyone to look it up on-line. HAC Vice-President Chris Kowalczyk told him there are literally thousands of people loosing their homes and the problem needs a fix NOW !He thought our best strategy for a “fix” to this mess is to send a message when we vote. He admitted he does not he all the answers but promised to do his homework.
